This tree is simpler than it first looked, and re-verifying the photo confirmed a clean structure: a single trunk (marker 1) rising almost straight from the soil, one real branch partway up that angles upward off the trunk rather than drooping (marker 2), then the apex fork (marker 3) where a vigorous leader takes over in one long sweeping curve, with a weak, browning shoot competing at that same fork (marker 4).
A relatively straight lower trunk building into one dramatic sweep higher up, off a single fork, is the classic informal-upright signature - as opposed to a whole-trunk lean from the base (which would call for slanting) or several repeating bends (which would call for a more sinuous formal read). The plan is correspondingly simple: let the leader's sweep read as the undisputed apex by removing the weak shoot at the fork, and decide whether the lower branch becomes the tree's first real side branch or gets removed to keep the lower trunk clean.
